I study the Powell studio of Lowell, MA, and based on the logotype, John or Annie Powell took this photo circa 1903. My dog expert daughter says this is likely a an ancestor what became standardized as an American Bulldog or Staffordshire Terrier. The character before "Powell" is a combination "J" and "E", showing the equal business partnership of John and Annie, whose birthname was Elizabeth. I'm fascinated that the image is perpendicular to the logotype, which may suggest this was a documentation of their personal pet and not a commercial project. Is there any information on the image's provenance?
